Design Thinking

Improved customer and user experiences

Akendi’s design approach applies the best elements of Design Thinking.

When we look at the Design Thinking (DT) approach, it is a design process that takes many elements of the User Centered Design (UCD) and provides a clear path to solving design challenges. Like UCD, it focuses on a need to understand users and customers. This in turn, helps grow the empathy that the designers need to have for their target audience. Building empathy helps in re-framing the product or service desing challenge in a human/user-centric format. This re-framing helps with later design phases where we apply prototyping, ideation, and iterative design. Design thinking as an approach is more often used in product design environments. At the basis of the approach are the Research-Design-Test activities.

Core Design Thinking elements are:

1. Empathise

2. Define

3. Ideate

4. Prototype

5. Test

These elements are not necessarily done once in a project. Allow for multipe rounds of ideation-prototyping-testing will result in the best outcomes. Co-design is one technique that stands out here. You see often co-design workshops conducted with the customer/user collaborating with the UX design team to rapidly create empathy and understanding, re-frame/define and finally ideate potential solutions.

The Design Thinking approach has a growing awareness and application in UX design teams and product oriented organisations that aim to deliver highly usable and successful experiences for their customers and users.

Design Thinking

The Design Thinking approach shares many principles with other human centered design processes. The current growth and adoption leads to better design processes and ultimately better experiences in the hands of users and customers.

How we use Design Thinking

We use design thinking primarily as part of our product design projects. For service design projects, the approach has some limitations that warrant a specialised service design process. Both product and service design are part of our Experience Thinking framework where they are joined by Content and Brand design processes to deliver Intentional Experiences.

Akendi’s Design Thinking enabled process provides the clear opportunity to create rich experiences without losing sight of the customer and user. Read more in the book: Experience Thinking - Creating Connected Experiences.
