Design Director

Akendi is looking for an experienced Design Director in our Toronto office.

The Design Director is the creative visionary that guides the creation of intentional experiences through graphic design for both Akendi and our clients. The Design Director strategizes and problem solves to ensure that the work that is delivered to internal and external clients meets key objectives, is usable and inspires them with perfectly executed design solutions.

The Design Director guides a team of employees with skills and experience related to graphic design and other creative industry fields to produce final outcomes that reflect positively on Akendi and our clients.

The Design Director is an ambassador for the Akendi brand and a key stakeholder in brand related decision-making, ensuring appropriateness, consistency and quality of imagery and messaging.

The Design Director is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of creative concepts of websites, software interfaces, mobile interfaces, collateral material, corporate identity and branding systems from concept to completion. The Design Director possesses an understanding of interactive development, copywriting and content strategy with core strengths in design and messaging. The Design Director works with a deep understanding of human centered research and how to apply it successfully to final design solutions.

The Design Director ensures that projects meet the requirements of the client and are completed on time and within budget while respecting client business goals as well as being responsible for maintaining day-to-day client relationships. The Design Director oversees the final execution of projects from vendors such as printers, photographers, illustrators, and copywriters and developers and coordinates estimates, scheduling, production and delivery of final products.


  • Communicate the creative approach, process, value and thinking to clients
  • Concept, develop and manage a “best in class” creative product
  • Manage creative team, project planning and work flow
  • Direct the creative team from concept to completion
  • Plan and estimate highly complex projects
  • Handle conflict management and resolution
  • Oversee the proper application of brand systems, typography, photography, colour theory and other components to create innovative visual solutions that meet customer, business and user need
  • Provide quality assurance of all creative deliverables
  • Contribute to the development of the creative team’s culture and quality standards
  • Delegate day-to-day responsibility to creative team and outside vendors as required
  • Elevate the creative level of the work coming out of the creative team
  • Educate project teams from other disciplines on the visual design process and its value
  • Be Akendi’s brand ambassador
  • Contribute to blog writing
  • Be fully knowledgeable and conversant in human centered design methodologies and how the visual design process fits with HCD
  • Take a leadership role in Akendi’s UX training program, creating visual design curriculum, course materials and delivering visual design training sessions
  • Manage partner relationships


  • A strong advocate for design excellence for Akendi and for the design community
  • Proven leadership skills, demonstrated in motivating designers and getting results
  • The ability to communicate design theories, creative concepts and methodologies in sales situations and to clients, colleagues and others
  • A passion for high quality design
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • A solutions oriented attitude
  • The ability to manage multiple deadlines and conflicting priorities
  • An eye for detail
  • Excellent design skills across layout, composition, colour theory, typography and brand systems application
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong command of spoken and written English
  • A high level of understanding of user research, information design and interaction design
  • An expert understanding of print and online production procedures
  • The ability to produce pixel perfect designs
  • Experience with managing and mentoring a design team
  • Willing to travel as required (15%)


  • 10+ years of industry/agency experience
  • Degree in Graphic Design or related
  • Strong design portfolio demonstrating print, web and interface design excellence
  • Proven experience managing large projects with globally distributed teams
  • A solid knowledge of the latest versions of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • A proven understanding of online and offline production
  • Experience managing a team of designers to creative excellence
  • A proven understanding of online and offline production
